The original building of the hotel was designed by the famous architectural partnership of Sir Thomas Dean and Benjamin Woodward, a partnership which also designed two of Dublin's finest buildings, the Museum Building at Trinity College and the Kildare Street Club. The building opened as St Stephen's parochial School in 1861 and was at centre of the Battle of Mount Street during the 1916 Easter Rising. The school closed in 1969 and did not re-open again until 1998, when it opened its doors as the Schoolhouse hotel.
